Scene 1:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Carly Snyder Home
SIMON FRASIER, CARLY SNYDER
>> Carly: How bad can it be? Did she call me a home wrecker? A slut? What?
>> Simon: That's the least of it.
>> Carly: Lucinda published it. Can't be too obscene. It isn't -- it's not obscene, is it? I do have the kids --
>> Simon: She wrote about the jewel theft.
>> Carly: Our jewel theft?
>> Simon: She says that we stole the crown jewels the night of the costume ball.
Scene 2:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Outside Bookstore
KATIE KASNOFF, MIKE KASNOFF
>> Katie: You don't want this.
>> Mike: What I want doesn't seem to matter anymore.
>> Katie: It's just a revised version of the old book, which you've already read.
>> Mike: With a brand new section.
>> Katie: You read the new pages?
>> Mike: I read how you're not the first married woman to have ever slept with her ex. I figured the rest was all about Simon, so I didn't read much more.
>> Katie: Honey, I really don't mention you that much. Just to say that you're wonderful and you deserve better than this, and I wish that I never risked our marriage and I wish that I could take it all back, but I can't.
>> Mike: No, you can't.
>> Katie: Then what are you doing here, Mike? If you're done with me, why stand in line to have a conversation with a woman that you hate?
>> Mike: I never said I hated you.
>> Katie: Okay, a woman that you can't respect and that you're never gonna forgive no matter how many times she apologizes.
>> Mike: Is that what you think this is? An apology?
>> Katie: No, it's -- what you read on that computer -- which is not in the book, by the way -- was basically like reading my diary. I was trying to sort out my feelings, which after we had our big blow up, became perfectly clear. And that's when I wrote the new chapter, not to hurt you, or me, but to get even with Simon.
>> Mike: For what?
>> Katie: For breaking up our marriage. If he never came back, none of this would've ever happened. And maybe it's not attractive to want revenge, but that's what this book is, and I don't care what people think.
>> Mike: Okay, you know what, let's not rewrite history. I didn't leave because of Simon. I left because of you. Because you don't know what you want.
>> Katie: But I do.
>> Mike: I know, you want it all. But you can't have it that way. You have to make choices and stick by them. And that's why you're mad -- because Simon made his choice. He may have slept with you, but he chose Carly.
>> Katie: Okay, is my pride hurt? Yes. You think you know someone, you have an experience like that with them and then they turn around and choose someone else, it's not the best feeling in the world.
>> Mike: Tell me about it.
>> Katie: But if we're talking about choices, I did not choose Simon. I did not consciously decide to do what I did, it just happened.
>> Mike: But afterwards, Simon chose Carly and you're mad about it.
>> Katie: No, I don't care about that. What I'm mad about is losing you.
>> Mike: So you decided to publish a book that makes me look like a fool?
>> Katie: I didn't decide to publish it. Lucinda did, even after I came to my senses and I tried to get it back, it was too late. And you're not a fool. You're the most wonderful man --
>> Mike: I know, I'm the most wonderful man in the world.
>> Katie: Mike, I'm so sorry. I don't know what to say. I did not mean for any of this to happen.
>> Mike: I know, you never do. But somehow, I always end up getting shafted. And I'm tired of it. I am tired of having my life turned upside down because you don't think things through. You are like a little kid who wants what she wants, when she wants it, whenever she wants it, and doesn't care about anyone else.
>> Katie: I'm sorry, I will change --
>> Mike: I'm not asking you to change.
>> Katie: Then what are you asking me? What do you want? You want to just lecture me about how I need to grow up? Because I thought that wasn't your concern anymore.
>> Mike: No, when you write about me and my life, it's my concern.
>> Katie: Okay, so, sue Lucinda, sue me. I will give you every cent that I make on this thing. I don't care!
>> Mike: I don't want the money. I want you to leave me alone. Don't talk to me, don't write about me, don't even think about me.
>> Katie: That's impossible.
>> Mike: Make an effort.
>> Katie: I only wrote this chapter in the book to get back at Simon for hurting us and breaking us up.
>> Mike: When are you gonna get this? I didn't leave you because you slept with Simon. I couldn't stay married to you because you still have feelings for him.
>> Katie: I hate him!
>> Mike: You're so jealous of Carly, you don't know what you feel.
>> Katie: That is not true. I do know what I feel. I love you and I hate Simon, and I wrote this to prove that to him. You know, if it's childish -- fine, I don't care. As long as Simon's hurt, I'm happy.
>> Mike: Hurt? How is this book going to hurt Simon?
Scene 3:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Carly Snyder Home
SIMON FRASIER, CARLY SNYDER, JACK SNYDER
>> Carly: How did this happen? She knows. She knows what we did.
>> Simon: Not necessarily.
>> Carly: Not necessarily? It's right here. It's right here in black and white.
>> Simon: It's right there, but hey, you know what? It could be just a coincidence.
>> Carly: A coincidence?
>> Simon: Uh-huh, yep. Think about it, she saw us at the party. She saw the jewels -- she remembered my history and then she made the whole thing up. Not knowing that it was all actually true.
>> Carly: You know, she's got me hooking up with the prince, while you go after the hussy with the 40 carat diamond. If that's not you and me and Vienna --
>> Simon: The characters, yes, the characters. But the rest could've just come from her vivid imagination. I mean, she is, after all, in the very loosest term of the words -- a writer.
>> Carly: What are we gonna do? Jack's gonna read this book! And he's gonna arrest us. I'm on probation. They're gonna put me in jail! I'm gonna lose my children!
>> Simon: Shh, shh, shh, shh. Calm down, just breath -- all right, let's just think about this for a second. All right? The first edition of the book, all right? She wrote about characters she knew and stories she'd heard.
>> Carly: Yeah, and Mike ended up in jail.
>> Simon: Yeah, yeah, but it all worked out in the end. Why? Because it's fiction. And like all writers, she borrows a little bit here and there from her own life and from the lives of her friends. Not buying it? All right, let's just say Katie does know the truth. Why didn't she go to the police?
>> Carly: Well, because they were gonna give her a big, fat advance for the privilege of locking us up.
>> Simon: No, no, see, Katie doesn't care about money. All she cares about is love.
>> Carly: Right.
>> Simon: Right, she's a romantic. And what's meaner than a romantic that's had her heart broken not once, but twice?
>> Carly: So you're saying it's revenge. Fine, it's revenge. It doesn't matter, we're still going to end up in jail. Jack is still going to end up reading this, and he's gonna put it all together.
>> Simon: Because she's jealous and vindictive? Are the people who stole that necklace. Jack was there. He was working security the night of that party. He saw me with the prince. Besides, he knows your history. He has a professional stake in solving this crime. And a personal stake in seeing me go down with you. There's no way he's not going to follow this up.
>> Simon: All right, let's say he does follow it up. He got no proof. I mean, nobody saw me pinch it, nobody saw me fence it. So dead end.
>> Carly: No, Simon, you're good -- honey, you are, you're good. But you're not perfect. And Jack is relentless. And he will follow this until he solves it.
>> Simon: Yeah, but sweetheart, solving it and proving it are two completely different things. And so without proof, nobody's going to jail.
>> Carly: Maybe Katie has proof?
>> Simon: How is Katie -- how does Katie possibly got proof? The thing is -- this thing and the whole thing -- it's a guessing game. She made it up. I mean, I sure as hell didn't breathe a word to her. I wouldn't do that to you.
>> Carly: But there was no me, was there? When you slept with Katie, there was no me. You and I had broken things off.
>> Simon: All right, I see what you're getting at, okay. Just because I didn't think you and I had a future doesn't mean I would put you at risk. Carly, you know I wouldn't do that to you, right?
>> Carly: I thought I knew a lot of things. That my husband loved me. That my husband would never leave me. And now, here I am, standing here with a not quite retired jewel thief, who's not quite over his ex-wife.
>> Simon: Okay, we both have a lot of baggage, and I don't blame you for not trusting me, but I'm trying to reassure you that I would never do anything to put you in any kind of legal jeopardy.
>> Carly: So you were thinking about me, then, before, during and after your little reunion with Katie? I don't think so. I think you got all lit up and hopeful -- and who knows what you said.
>> Simon: I know exactly what I said, right? It had nothing to do with you or any diamonds. Carly, listen -- if Katie somehow put two and two together and the cops actually do come after us? Sweetie, I will protect you.
>> Carly: How?
>> Simon: I'll take the rap. What do you think?
>> Carly: Simon, Jack saw me with the prince.
>> Simon: All right, we can explain that away in two seconds. You saw me go after Vienna, you wanted to make me jealous, so you went after him. I was the one who actually pinched the necklace, okay? That's it. Nobody saw you. You're not involved in that.
>> Carly: Who's gonna believe that?
>> Simon: Everyone's gonna believe that. Because everyone wants to. The people are after me, Carly, not you. Listen, I promised you when we got into this that I would not see you hurt. And I won't, okay? All right?
>> Carly: Mm-hmm.
>> Simon: All right.
>> Carly: Wait, where are you going?
>> Simon: I'm gonna go see Katie, all right, and find out exactly what she knows, if anything.
[ Doorbell rings ]
>> Carly: It's Jack! Hi, Jack.
>> Jack: Hi. Very, very sorry to interrupt. Parker left his book report on the coffee table.
>> Carly: Oh.
>> Jack: Simon.
>> Simon: Jack. Listen, I gotta go anyway -- so I'll see you later on.
>> Carly: The coffee table, huh?
>> Jack: Yes, which means it could be anywhere.
>> Carly: That's okay, I'll find it --
>> Jack: Hey, I heard the new edition was due out today.
Scene 5:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Outside Bookstore
KATIE KASNOFF, MIKE KASNOFF
>> Katie: You want to know how this book will hurt Simon? Read it, you'll see.
>> Mike: No, why don't you just give me the blow by blow?
>> Katie: Okay. I tell the world what an arrogant, immoral, selfish jerk he is, and then I get to the good stuff. That he's a jewel thief.
>> Mike: Which everyone already knows.
>> Katie: No, not everyone.
>> Mike: Everyone he'd care about.
>> Katie: Okay, it's one thing to have a vague idea about something, it's quite another to have it written down where everyone can read it.
>> Mike: Katie, this book is gossip.
>> Katie: No, a lot of it's true. And look, all these people want to read it. I will be back in just a second.
>> Mike: You know what, sell your books. Just know that Simon could care less. I am the one that everyone's laughing at.
>> Katie: Nobody is laughing at you. If anything, they're mad at me for hurting you. I'm mad at me for hurting you. Mike, I would do anything to get your trust back. Please, just tell me what I can do. I don't want Simon. I want you.
>> Mike: Prove it.
>> Katie: How? Tell me and I will do anything.
Scene 6:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Outside Bookstore
SIMON FRASIER, KATIE KASNOFF, MIKE KASNOFF
>> Mike: You're done with Simon?
>> Katie: Absolutely. I am done, Mike.
>> Mike: Okay for your sake, I hope that's the truth. Because the fact remains all you did with this book was just tell the world how important he is to you.
>> Katie: Okay, if that's how you feel, I will have Lucinda recall the entire thing. I will shred every page myself, I promise.
>> Mike: No, forget the book. What you need to do from now on is ignore him. That's the real revenge. Make him unimportant. Prove to yourself that you can have a future without Simon Frasier -- get him out of your life.
>> Katie: Okay, and if I can do that -- I can hope that you'll come back to me?
>> Simon: Excuse me. I'm really sorry to interrupt you, I am. I really need a word with Katie.
>> Mike: Help yourself.
>> Katie: No, wait! Mike, wait! Please don't --
>> Simon: I guess he didn't like the book either, huh?
>> Katie: I guess he doesn't like you, and I don't blame him.
>> Simon: Well good, nobody's happy. Katie, you have really, really gotta stop blaming me for what happened. You were there, too.
>> Katie: Do you want an autograph? Because that's all I have time for right now.
>> Simon: No, I want -- I want an answer. Why did you write this?
>> Katie: Because it's true.
>> Simon: So you are deliberately trying to hurt me?
>> Katie: You wrecked my marriage.
>> Simon: You made a choice, okay? We both did. Now, I know you regret it now. All right. No, look at me -- you can't keep blaming me for something that happened in the heat of the moment. Listen, we were both overcome by some strong feelings, some pent up emotions. But we were equally to blame for what happened. Now this -- this book, this little vendetta you have -- yeah, I wanted you back at one point, but it's time for you to grow up and start taking responsibility for your actions.
>> Katie: Oh, come on, Simon, you never wanted me back, you want Carly.
>> Simon: Is that what this is all about?
>> Katie: No, I'm just making a point.
>> Simon: What is it? Tell me.
>> Katie: Just go away!
>> Simon: You told the whole world that I'm a jewel thief.
>> Katie: You are a jewel thief.
>> Simon: No, I'm not anymore. I'm a real estate developer.
>> Katie: Oh, really? Well, then go develop your little dream house with Carly and leave me alone.
>> Simon: My little dream house, huh?
>> Katie: Or whatever you and Carly want to do next, is that better?
>> Simon: Why are you so mad at me? Look at me.
>> Katie: I don't have to look at you anymore, Simon. That's Carly's job now.
>> Simon: So you're mad at her, too? That's why you go and tell the whole world that we went and stole a necklace?
>> Katie: I saw you.
>> Simon: What do you mean?
>> Katie: You and Carly with the necklace.
>> Simon: And when was this?
>> Katie: The other night. When you were putting it around her greedy little neck.
>> Simon: At the Lakeview.
>> Katie: Yeah.
>> Simon: Well, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were there. If I did --
>> Katie: What? You would have dragged her off to a little private party?
>> Simon: Oh, please, come on --
>> Katie: Simon, just know this. I would never go back to you. I love Mike.
>> Simon: Well, that's good. I'm very happy for you, I really am. I've just got one last question. When you saw me put that little present on Carly's neck --
>> Katie: Little? You could break a kneecap with that thing.
>> Simon: Is that when you got the idea to make us thieves in your book?
>> Katie: Yeah, where else?
Scene 7:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Carly Snyder Home
CARLY SNYDER, JACK SNYDER
>> Carly: Jack, you don't want to read that.
>> Jack: Why not?
>> Carly: Because it's trash -- it's gossip.
>> Jack: Did I see Simon's name in there?
>> Carly: Yeah, I think so. I haven't read much of it myself, but from what I understand, Katie did decide to include Simon.
>> Jack: I thought they were over. She's married, he's moved on --
>> Carly: I know. I know. I guess Katie has some issues with Simon being back in town and dating me -- and she doesn't like it, so she wrote some unflattering things about him in her little book.
>> Jack: She's married.
>> Carly: I know. Well, I suppose she's desperate -- for material. I'm not a writer, I don't know. Why don't you check the kitchen and I'll check Parker's room. I bet he left that report right in the printer.
>> Jack: Hey, before you go, let me take a look at that book?
>> Carly: Why?
>> Jack: Anything you're trying this hard to hide, I want to read.
>> Carly: You want to read it, you go ahead. It's not like you can't get it at any old bookstore. Just don't say I didn't warn you.
>> Jack: You're warning me?
>> Carly: Yeah, Jack. Katie's jealous. And I'm not saying that it's mature, adult behavior, but there it is. And she has written about Simon and me in pretty lurid terms. And you were the person who said you wanted me to keep all the personal details to myself, but if you want to read it, by all means just knock yourself out then.
>> Jack: You know what, I'll pass.
>> Carly: Your call.
>> Jack: She's got a knack, doesn't she?
>> Carly: Who's that?
>> Jack: Katie. The last time one of her books came out, we found a skeleton in the basement.
>> Carly: Right, but I heard that all the new stuff is all fiction.
>> Jack: So you and Simon, you're not lurid in real life?
>> Carly: Ah! Look at that!
>> Jack: Yes, there it is. It's really beautiful. Simon showed it to me.
>> Carly: He shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry.
>> Jack: No, nothing to apologize for. He was sitting there with the necklace waiting for you. And I had to take a look at it. I mean, a man like Simon with a piece of jewelry like that, I get curious.
>> Carly: What do you mean, "a man like Simon?"
>> Jack: A jewel thief.
>> Carly: He's a real estate developer, Jack. He bought me a gift. It was a celebration. We'd just sold all those units.
>> Jack: Right. Okay, don't worry about the book. I'm sure if there's anything in there I need to know, I'll find out.
Scene 8:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Outside Bookstore
SIMON FRASIER, KATIE KASNOFF
>> Simon: So you made something up, huh? You pretend that Carly and I what -- jewel thieves so you could sell a few books?
>> Katie: Well, a, you are a jewel thief. And b, maybe you really did steal those diamonds.
>> Simon: Have you got some proof for this, Katie? Otherwise, you know, it's slander.
>> Katie: Not if it's true.
>> Simon: You just said you made it up!
>> Katie: Well, I could only get so many pages out of you and your sick affair with Carly.
>> Simon: You really are a piece of work.
>> Katie: You hurt me, I hurt you.
>> Simon: How did I hurt you so badly? We had sex. Nothing that we've never done before. And you went back to the man that you claim you really love. The fact that Mike didn't stick around is not my fault.
>> Katie: You don't like my book, don't recommend it to your friends.
>> Simon: You implicated Carly and me in a crime.
>> Katie: Unless you stole the crown jewels of Leonia, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
>> Simon: I'm running a business. I talk to people in finance. Word gets out that I'm a suspect, I lose credibility and I can not have that! Katie, I need people to trust me.
>> Katie: Well you should've thought of that before you broke my heart! Next!
>> Simon: Wait, wait -- just wait one sec, thank you. Thank you.
>> Katie: Just leave or I will call security. And I'm not kidding. All right, time to sign some books again. Who's next?
>> Simon: Who's next? There we go. Sign 'em.
>> Katie: Sorry about that. Who should I make this out to?
Scene 9:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Carly Snyder Home
SIMON FRASIER, CARLY SNYDER
>> Simon: Hey.
>> Carly: Hey. Jack found the book. I managed to get it away from him, but it's just a matter of time, Simon, before he reads it or before somebody tells him what's in it.
>> Simon: I spoke to Katie. She made the whole thing up.
>> Carly: What?
>> Simon: She has no idea that we stole the jewels. It was just a lucky guess.
>> Carly: You sure?
>> Simon: Yeah, she needed a story. So she used the fact that I used to be a bit light-fingered, added a few details from the ball -- there you go, presto, instant epilogue.
>> Carly: What gives her the right?
>> Simon: I think you and I both know the answer to that.
>> Carly: She lost Mike and she blames us. What do we do now?
>> Simon: Nothing. Nothing, we enjoy our success. We look for some new properties to buy and we carry on like nothing happened.
>> Carly: And if Jack goes to Katie?
>> Simon: It's just a work of fiction, right? What's she gonna tell him? Sweetie, we have nothing to worry about, okay? Come here.
Scene 10:
Location: Oakdale
Scene: Outside Bookstore
KATIE KASNOFF, MIKE KASNOFF, JACK SNYDER
[ Katie remembering ]
>> Mike: Prove to yourself you can have a life without Simon Frasier. Get him out of your life.
[ Katie calls Jack ]
[ Cell phone ringing ]
>> Jack: Jack Snyder.
>> Katie: Jack, it's Katie.
>> Jack: Hey, Katie. What's up?
>> Katie: I really need to talk to you. Are you free first thing tomorrow morning?
>> Jack: I can be. Is this important?
>> Katie: It's about Simon.
