>> Simon: You know, I had an uncle once who said he was a palm-reader. And he said that everyone's palms, like their
faces, were unique.
>> Lily: Well, he was wrong, wasn't he?
>> Simon: No. You are unique, Lily. Just talk to me. Talk to me. Tell me how it feels to have discovered your double. I mean,
as for me, there is absolutely no one in my family who even looks remotely like me. You see this mark here? That mark right
there? I used to wonder, where did that come from? I mean, there has to be somebody else in my family who has that -
>> Lily: Stop it. Stop.
>> Simon: Stop what?
>> Lily: Yesterday you locked me in a closet, and now you're reading my palm and asking me about my emotional state?
>> Simon: Oh, come on, Lily, we have been through so much together.
>> Lily: No, no, you put me through so much.
>> Simon: Come on, we were so close for a while, you remember? You know, we said we felt like kindred spirits. And now we
have lost so much trust. So much --
>> Lily: No, no, we haven't lost anything, because the trust was an illusion. A sleight of hand, just like you making quarters
appear from behind luke's ear. Watch the show.
>> Simon: You were right yesterday. This entertainment is tacky. Forget about it.
>> Lily: I do recognize this behavior.
>> Simon: What do you mean? What?
>> Lily: This is exactly the way luke acts when he's broken something and he doesn't want to be noticed.
>> Simon: Oh, right, so what do you suspect I've broken?
>> Lily: The question is, why are you trying so hard not to look at the show? And why are you trying to keep me from watching
it?
>> Simon: What?
>> Lily: Rose -- Rose is dancing her heart out up there, and you can't even bear to look at it for a second.
>> Simon: Look, that is nonsense. Come on, I was just -- I was just curious about you.
>> Lily: Is it her costume? Does it embarrass -- embarrass you?
>> Simon: Well, yeah, yeah, maybe a little. I mean, I just can't help thinking that that's you up there wearing practically
nothing. You know, I'm just not used to thinking of you that way.
>> Lily: Oh, I see. You've pegged me as the 19th century type with the collar up to here --
>> Simon: No.
>> Lily: -- All uptight, and Rose is all glamorous. She's got feathers and makeup and -- jewelry. Oh, it can't be. Is it?
>> Simon: What are you doing? What --
>> Lily: Maybe that hunk of glass that rose is wearing on her headpiece, maybe it isn't so fake after all.
Scene 2:

[Applause.]
>> Lily: You couldn't look at the stage because that rock in rose's headpiece was blinding you.
>> Simon: What are you talking about?
>> Lily: It's the same stone.
>> Simon: What is? What is?
>> Lily: The diamond in Rose's headpiece. You're right, Simon. We know each other very well, and I know when you are lying.
Look at that. There. That's it. That --
>> Simon: That? That?
>> Lily: That's what you've been --
>> Simon: What, are you kidding me? Come on. That can't be real.
>> Lily: Why not?
>> Simon: Lily, come on. If that was real, then Rose would be living high on the hog, not scraping by in some Atlantic City
show room.
>> Lily: If -- if Rose knew that it were real. I will bet a one-way ticket to Australia that you aren't gonna tell her.
>> Simon: Where are you going?
>> Lily: I'm going to tell Rose that she just leaped tax brackets.
>> Simon: No, Lily. For your own sake, you just keep your mouth shut.
Scene 3:

>> Lily: It is. It is the diamond that you were after, or else you wouldn't be so worried about me talking to Rose.
>> Simon: No, no, no. You misunderstood me. I was thinking of you and Rose.
>> Lily: And the cause of your selflessness?
>> Simon: Oh, come on, Lily, think about it. If you march in there and you tell Rose that she has suddenly become a
multimillionaire, she will hit the roof.
>> Lily: So what? That's great.
>> Simon: No, it's not. What if the rock turns out to be fake? Come on, Rose will never forgive you.
>> Lily: Your sudden concern about my lasting relationship with Rose is touching.
>> Simon: I do. I do, and you know it. I care about you and Rose.
>> Lily: Oh, just cut it out, Simon. Just -- this was your big secret, right? All along. All your interest in my family heirlooms. "Oh,
Lily, we need just the right piece for your portrait. Can we look at your entire collection of jewelry?" Come on. All your
questions. I thought it was something a little deeper than a get-rich-quick scheme. I gave you way too much credit.
>> Simon: Oh, believe me, Lily, money has never been my motive.
>> Lily: Oh, now you are so worried about my talking to Rose. You are more transparent than any piece of costume jewlery
--
>> Simon: Oh, for -- okay, fine. Go to her dressing room, okay? And when Rose comes off stage, you tell her that she has
suddenly become wealthy beyond her wildest dreams. Yeah, yeah, she'll get a really good laugh out of it, and then hate you
when that rock turns out to be paste.
>> Lily: Or she could turn out to be incredibly wealthy.
>> Simon: Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, good one. Good one, good one, good one. You go tell her. Embarrass
yourself. Go on. Look, Lily, this is the stuff that trashy romance novels are made of. You know, hunk of glass turns out to be
diamond, lowly showgirl gets transformed into multimillionairess. Look, I think Rose is a good sport. I think she'll get a really
good giggle out of it.
>> Lily: No, you're right. You're right. I can't go backstage and tell her that, "Rose, you have diamond that could be worth
millions of dollars."
>> Simon: Exactly.
>> Lily: No, no, no. I'm going to suggest that she take it to a qualified jeweler to have it appraised.

>> Lily: If the diamond isn't real, then neither is the danger you'd been warning me about. There's no one who would kill to
possess it, as you so dramatically put it.
>> Simon: You're an intelligent person, Lily. If you thought the stone could be real, then why wouldn't any ill-educated,
unscrupulous person out there do the same?
>> Lily: Who would do that? A thug? A diamond thief?
>> Simon: Anybody. Anybody wanting to get rich quick illegally.
>> Lily: And what would they do? Would the follow me all the way to Atlantic City? Play cat-and-mouse games with me?
Would they lock me in a closet, and then try to steal the jewelry from my look-alike?
>> Simon: Look, if they saw you take that rock to being appraised, then they surely would look twice, and you and Rose
could be in some serious trouble.
>> Lily: Right.
>> Simon: Yes. You could be leading yourself and Rose into danger for nothing -- all for nothing.
>> Lily: If it's nothing, then why are you trying so hard to dissuade me?
>> Simon: You won't change your mind?
>> Lily: No. Especially not now.
>> Simon: All right. All right, okay. I'll tell you the truth. The diamond -- it is real.
>> Lily: I knew it.
>> Simon: That hunk of glass, Lily, up there is the rose of sharon diamond that was in my family for generations.
>> Lily: Rose? The rose. The rose that your great-grandfather mentioned in his letters? The one that was hers to keep forever
-- Beloved.
>> Simon: Yes. Yes. And it was lost until now. That is the god's honest truth, Lily. Okay? You got to believe me, all right? Now
you know. But there is something else, okay? The rose is cursed.
>> Lily: Can't you ever tell the truth without peppering it with a lie?
>> Simon: I am not lying.
>> Lily: It's cursed. How is it cursed?
>> Simon: Because it has brought bad luck to whoever has possessed it. Right, you have got to believe me, Lily. You and
Rose are in some serious danger.
Scene 5:

[Applause.]
>> Lily: All of your cards have been played, Simon, especially the one that says "danger, Lily, danger."
>> Simon: This is not a game.
>> Lily: Well, it's just part of your ruse to throw me off the scent. I know.
>> Simon: You've got to believe me.
>> Lily: And that whole part about it being cursed -- wow. That's way over the top.
>> Simon: All right, semantics, Lily, okay? Forget the word "cursed," but that diamond has always been accompanied by peril,
all right? My stuff being ransacked at Cal's place, that was --
>> Lily: You probably set that up so it would scare me, so I would back off. I'm gonna go tell Rose to have that jewel
appraised.
>> Simon: Wait, wait. You do that, you are putting yourself at some serious risk. That is the truth.
>> Lily: The truth? The truth, Simon? Stick around, maybe they'll let you do stand-up.
>> Simon: The rose of sharon diamond by rights belongs to me and my family. The sooner Rose is rid of it, the safer you both
will be.
>> Lily: You are the only one claiming that your family owns that diamond. And you know how much your word means to me?
Nothing.
>> Simon: Then look me in the eyes, Lily -- look me in the eyes and you will see that I am telling you the truth. Let me protect
you, please?
>> Lily: No. No. I will not fall for this, not again.
>> Simon: Please, Lily, stay out of this. It is not your diamond.
>> Lily: For all I know, it's not yours either. And I will not let you steal it from Rose.
>> Simon: Okay, I have dragged you into something sinister, and I am so sorry. But this is none of your concern.
>> Lily: I'm in it now, aren't I? And I am responsible for whatever happens to Rose.
>> Simon: No, no, no, no. You are not. All right? Just think about your children and Holden.
>> Lily: My husband and my children are the most important people in the world to me, so don't you even go there.
Scene 6:
Scene: Backstage
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: Granted, you and Rose look alike, but you hardly even know her. Why on earth would you risk your life for
someone you had just met?
>> Lily: I'm the one that doesn't believe you, remember?
>> Simon: Lily, please, last chance. Walk away. Please, walk away while you still can.
>> Lily: When I saw Rose for the first time, something hit me, like I'd found something that I didn't even know that I was
looking for. And it wasn't some stupid diamond. Yes, Simon, Rose and I have the same face, and that's amazing enough, but
there's something else. I feel close to Rose and I will not -- not let you scam her.
>> Simon: That diamond is my heritage. Okay? Just like those photographs were yours. It has been in my family for
generations. And I refuse -- I refuse to let you or Rose or anyone prevent me from getting what is rightfully mine.
>> Lily: And I refuse to let you see Rose.
SECURITY GUARD COMES BY.
>> Security guard: You gonna start a quick-change routine, Rose? You sure lost that costume in a hurry.
[Imitating rose.]
>> Lily: Ha! I wish I could lose this barnacle of a man half that quick. Could you do me a favor, hon, and make this guy go
away, please?
SIMON FRASIER AND SECURITY GUARD
>> Security guard: Not you again. You heard the lady. Give her a rest.
>> Simon: Look, buddy, that is not Rose.
>> Security guard: And I'm not the security guard who's gonna toss you out on your butt again.
>> Simon: Look, you do not understand, okay? Listen -- listen to me. I am trying to protect her.
>> Security guard: That's my job.
>> Simon: Listen, mate, you don't understand what you're doing, okay? Just let me go!
>> Security guard: You don't belong back here. Come on. How many times I gotta tell you?
>> Simon: I've gotta go see her again.
>> Security guard: Just forget about it.
>> Simon: Okay, okay, okay. Cruz -- just listen, I just need to talk to her just for a second. Please. All right. If that's the way
you want it, fine! All right? I give up. You're free to go.
[Security guard walks off.]
[Simon follows an Eiffel Tower prop into the dressing room area.]
[Ugly shoes woman comes down some steps in the backstage area and follows Simon.]
Scene 7:
Scene: Dressing room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: There you are. That is my diamond.
>> Lily: No, it belongs to Rose, and I won't let you take it.
>> Simon: Give it to me!
>> Lily: No, Simon, let go! No, you can't have it!
[Ugly shoe woman enters and hides behind the modesty screen. A handgun barrel emerges between the screen partition
gap.]
>> Simon: Give me that!
>> Lily: Let go! Stop! Stop! Simon, please!
