EPISODE # 8
MARCH 13, 2000
Scene 1:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: Simon? Hello? Simon?
>> Simon: Lily? I wasn't expecting you.
>> Lily: I'm so sorry.
>> Simon: No, no, no, I just -- where did you come from?
>> Lily: I tried knocking, but I guess with all the music -- I've got to go. I shouldn't be here. I'm interrupting.
>> Simon: No, no, no, come on, you're not interrupting anything at all.
>> Lily: I brought some blankets because it gets cold at night, and I brought a care package for you.
>> Simon: Thank you. Let me help you with that. Thank you.
Scene 2:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: I promise I won't keep popping in on you like this.
>> Simon: Lily, this is your grandfather's place. You are welcome to pop in whenever you like.
>> Lily: Thank you. I know artists need their space and no interruptions. No distractions. Well, if you need anything else, just give a call. We don't stand on ceremony around here.
>> Simon: Well, it already feels like home.
>> Lily: Good. Well, I should go.
>> Simon: Manners, simon. I am so sorry. Can I get you anything?
>> Lily: No. I need to get back to the house and you need to continue whatever you were doing. May I? That's me.
>> Simon: It's nothing. I was just doodling, you know.
>> Lily: I love it.
>> Simon: Really? Well, I can do so much better when I have more time.
>> Lily: You do portraits?
>> Simon: I've tried my hand at it.
>> Lily: This is amazing because I --
>> Simon: You what?
>> Lily: Nothing.
>> Simon: No, no, no, come on, come on.
>> Lily: Holden's birthday is coming up and I was going to have my photo taken by a family friend, but a portrait would be great.
>> Simon: Well, if you would pose for me, lily, I would consider it an honor.
Scene 3:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: I can't let you paint my portrait.
>> Simon: Why not? Are you doubting my talent?
>> Lily: No, your sanity. I already have you rebuilding my family room.
>> Simon: Yeah, but I want to do it.
>> Lily: You say that now. I cannot sit still for more than a minute at a time.
>> Simon: Well, there's only one way to find out if we can make this work.
>> Lily: You mean -- no, I can't.
>> Simon: Come on, take a chance, lily. I bet you'll be surprised at the things you can do.
>> Lily: I don't know.
>> Simon: All right, all right -- a compromise. You sit with me for tonight, just a little bit. And I'll rough out some preliminary sketches. You can get to feel what it's like to posing, check out my work.
>> Lily: Well --
>> Simon: What've you got to lose?
>> Lily: All right, all right! I'll do it. I'll do it.
>> Simon: All right. Well, there's no time like the present. Come over here.
>> Lily: Oh, time. Time. I gotta go, because holden, he's going to be wondering where I've disappeared to.
>> Simon: Yeah, sure, I mustn't keep you. Here, let me help you with that. If this portrait's going to remain a surprise, we don't want to make him curious.
>> Lily: I'll call you soon.
[Simon closes the door.]
>> Simon: I'll be waiting.
LILY WALSH SNYDER PHONES SIMON FRASIER.
[Phone ringing.]
>> Simon: Hello.
>> Lily: Hi, it's lily. I hope I'm not disturbing you.
>> Simon: No, not at all. I wa sitting here, wondering how to pose you for the portrait. I hope you haven't had a change of heart.
>> Lily: As a matter of fact I have. Holden had to go to new york, to get his daughter, Abigail.
>> Simon: His daughter?
>> Lily: It's a very long story. And luke and faith are at their grandmother's,` so I have time to sit for you tonight, for my portrait, if you're still up for it.
>> Simon: Yeah, absolutely! This is terrific!
>> Lily: What should I wear?
>> Simon: It should be something comfortable. It's only going to b a shoulders-up sketch, so something that accent waits the neckline. If you have a favorite necklace. Something classic. A family heirloom, perhaps.
>> Lily: I have just the piece. See you soon.
>> Simon: I'll be waiting.
Scene 4:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: Hi. Sorry it took me so long. I tried on all these different blouses.
>> Simon: I'm sure it's stunning.
>> Lily: I hope you like it. It's one of holden's favorites, and I can wear it off the shoulders if you like, so --
>> Simon: Terrific, great. Yeah.
>> Lily: What do you think?
>> Simon: I think it's perfect. All right. Over here by the fireplace. Straight ahead. Just take a seat here.
>> Lily: Okay.
>> Simon: And try to relax.
>> Lily: No backless stool, no tortured pose?
>> Simon: No, nothing like that. All right, let's see. Here, give me that. Put your hands like so. Your head like that. Perfect. Now, eyes straight ahead, that charming smile -- and this in your hand.
>> Lily: For the portrait?
>> Simon: No, for the subject. I hate to drink alone. Okay. Okay. Not too painful?
>> Lily: Makes me self-conscious -- having you watch me so closely.
>> Simon: I promise I'll be gentle. That's a lovely necklace.
>> Lily: Thank you. Holden gave it to me.
>> Simon: Ah-ha. I bet there's some wildly romantic story attached to it.
>> Lily: No, not really. He used to do things like that all the time. Swept me off my feet.
>> Simon: Let me just try something else.
[Simon pulls the top off her shoulders slightly. Lily helps him with it.]
>> Simon: Thank you.
>> Lily: Something wrong?
>> Simon: It's still not quite right. It's not you, it's not you. You know, it's the necklace. Yeah, it's a gorgeous piece, don't get me wrong, but let me show you this. You see, between the sweep of your shoulders and your eyes and your hair and the curve of your neck, it kind of creates a hard line.
>> Lily: Oh, I guess I see what you mean.
>> Simon: Yeah? You see what I'm saying? You see, we want the eyes to travel. And the choker creates a dividing line. So, we need something suspended, a chain that drapes along the planes of your skin. Something bold and unique. A jewel that will match your own beauty.
Scene 5:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: I do have other necklaces, costume stuff.
>> Simon: I'll just keep the throat bare until we find the right piece.
>> Lily: You're the boss.
>> Simon: I tell you what -- next session, why don't you bring along your entire collection and we'll go through it.
>> Lily: Good idea.
>> Simon: Great.
>> Lily: I don't want to keep you up too late. I know you have to get up early with the construction.
>> Simon: You know, I'm not tired, I'm inspired. Okay, head up a bit? Great. Brilliant. You comfortable? Yeah. All right. Then let's talk about something else. How about your family? I've met your kids and your husband and this is your grandfather's place. Who else is there?
>> Lily: You wouldn't believe it.
>> Simon: Why not?
>> Lily: My family tree is quite complicated.
>> Simon: Keep talking.
>> Lily: There's my mother, Lucinda Walsh.
>> Simon: Yeah, I've seen her around the place. There's not much of a family resemblance, is there?
>> Lily: Lucinda Walsh isn't my biological mother.
>> Simon: You're -- you're adopted?
>> Lily: Yes.
>> Simon: Wow. Have you ever met your natural mother?
>> Lily: Eventually. Iva Snyder. She is also adopted.
>> Simon: Wow. That is complicated.
>> Lily: And there's Caroline Carpenter, that's my grandmother.
>> Simon: Well, I guess I've just taken it always for granted. Being able to reach out and touch my past.
>> Lily: Dearest beloved.
>> Simon: Yeah. Like in my great grandfather's letters. Did -- did your grandmother leave you anything like that? Some -- some tangible link to the past?
Scene 6:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: Yeah, my great-grandfather left me those letters and photos. It's an amazing thing, to have something tangible that links you to a past you never knew, which brings me back to my previous question -- what else did caroline leave you? Besides your eyes or that certain smile?
[Simon looks up to see a sleeping Lily.]
>> Simon: Nice work, Simon. Very smooth. You've talked her to death. And you're no closer to the answer than you were before. Caroline Carpenter could she be the answer?
[Simon covers Lily up to her head with a blanket.]
>> Simon: Well, there's always tomorrow.
