EPISODE #27
APRIL 24, 2000
Scene 1:
>>Lily: Oh.
>> Lucinda: Hi!
>> Lily: Mother! What are you doing here?
>> Lucinda: Oh, darling, I just had the most wonderful time with your son. He's eating his dinner and I like the baby-sitter. I --
>> Lily: I'm glad.
>> Lucinda: And you're home finally.
>> Lily: Yes. I was at cal's, seeing simon.
>> Lucinda: Ah. You know, I don't really know why he's staying here after what holden said at the party. And I never did understand why he was your armpiece for the benefit.
>> Lily: I have my reasons.
>> Lucinda: It was very public, dear.
>> Lily: Not now.
>> Lucinda: Lily -- can I just give you --
>> Lily: No advice. Absolutely not.
>> Lucinda: Why don't you just ship him back down under where he belongs?
>> Lily: Please, stay out of this.
>> Lucinda: Why, dear? Am I supposed to stand by and watch while he burns down your whole house?
>> Lily: I know what I'm doing.
>> Lucinda: Dear, aside from his otter-like good looks, which are certainly decorative, I just don't understand. I don't understand why you countence his presence.
>> Lily: Because he knows things about me, and I have to find out what they are.
Scene 2:
>> Simon: Of course I don't mind waiting. These things take time. We're going back generations. Yeah, I'll hold. Come on. I'm too close. Who's next? Yeah, yeah, I'm still here. What? No, no, no, that can't be right. Now, listen, are you completely sure that your records are accurate? Yeah, no -- look, look, it's just that I am certain that vera had children. Okay, now -- no, it's all right. You're the expert with all that official documentation at your disposal. Listen, listen, mary, is it? Mary? Listen, mary, I was wondering, is it -- this would really help me out -- but is it possible to get a copy of vera hathaway's will? It is? All right, fantastic. This is -- this would be a great help. Yeah, thank you.
Scene 2:
>> Lucinda: Lily, don't leave me hanging.
>> Lily: I know this is appealing to the brick wall, but please don't get involved.
>> Lucinda: I am involved.
>> Lily: No, you're trying to get involved. If you scare him off, I will be left with nothing.
>> Lucinda: What does he got to be scared of?
>> Lily: Nothing. I'm just trying to figure out what he's doing here and what he's after.
>> Lucinda: Oh, okay. Well, how are you doing? So far, you know the answer to any of --
>> Lily: I've gotten questions to my questions if you must know.
>> Lucinda: Give me five minutes alone with him and I'll get you all the answers you need.
>> Lily: Torture is illegal, mother.
>> Lucinda: He won't know what hit him.
>> Lily: I need him alive.
>> Lucinda: Yeah? Okay. All right, whatever's going on -- I mean, I don't know, maybe you're too close to it, darling. He's invaded your house here. Maybe what you really need and require is an objective eye.
>> Lily: Yours.
>> Lucinda: Mine, of course.
>> Lily: No, see, simon came into my life. I have to find out what he's after myself.
>> Lucinda: I see. Well, all right. If you need any help, other than iva's, of course --
>> Lily: I will let you know.
>> Lucinda: Oh, suissage, ma fie. I mean, I think this guy is slippery and very crafty.
>> Lily: Good-bye, mother.
>> Lucinda: Bye. Bye.
[ Door closes ]
>> Lily: Well, that wasn't hard at all. In fact, that was too easy.
[ Computer beeps ]
Scene 3:
>>Simon: Ms. Walsh, absolute pleasure to see you.
>> Lucinda: Well, I'm afraid that the pleasure is all yours. And I have to tell you that I'm in no mood for your outback charm.
>> Simon: Really? What are you in the mood for?
>> Lucinda: What game are you playing, mr. Frasier? What aussie con are you trying to pull off with my daughter?
>>Simon: Come on in.
>> Lucinda: Now. What do you really want here? Let's forget about the architect angle, because I can still smell the burnt wiring.
>> Simon: Well, Lily had my great-grandfather's letters. Didn't she tell you 'bout those --
>> Lucinda: Oh, that you can't live without. Right, I read 'em. What things do you know about my daughter?
>> Simon: About lily? Only the things that both of us have shared.
>> Lucinda: Because she's beautiful and she's wealthy.
>> Simon: Look, I'm not interested in her money.
>> Lucinda: Oh, then what are you interested in? Come on! I mean, the letters -- my heart, unlike my daughter's, is tempered by age and experience --
>> Lily: Mother, that's enough! You have no right to badger simon. He's my friend, and he has done absolutely nothing wrong.
>> Lucinda: That we know of yet.
>> Lily: Leave him alone.
>> Lucinda: All right, darling. My daughter wants me to go, so I wil but I leave you with this warning -- if you hurt he or hurt any in her family, you'll be sorry you came. Because I am a suspicious woman, and I am also one with a fondness for revenge!
>> Lily: I -- I'm very sorry about that. Mother!
Scene 4:
>> Lucinda: Honey, you trust people too easily.
>> Lily: And you trust --
>> Lucinda: One. As somebody said, "humankind was mother nature's only serious mistake."
>> Lily: Thanks for having such faith in me.
>> Lucinda: Honey, I have faith in you. I'm lled with faith for you. It's him I'm worried about.
>> Lily: Don't be.
>> Lucinda: Well, why don't we just get in a private investigator?
>> Lily: No, n no. If simon finds out what we're up to, he will take off, and everything will be ruined.
>> Lucinda: Now we're getting so whe. At is gog to be ruined?
>> Lily: Simon -- simon could be connected to my family. My biological family.
>> Lucinda: Oh. Um -- oh, I see. Well, how?
>> Lily: I don't know. Iva has told me everhing that she knows, but this goes, I mean, back, many, many generations.
>> Lucinda: Iva? Iva's sohow connected with this australian?
>> Lily: I don't know. Hey. You're the one that taught me to be a good parent, and as for luke or faith getting involved in something, I'd want to take on Simon, too. You're the one who gave me killer instincts when it comes to my children.
>> Lucinda: That is a compliment, isn't it?
>> Lily: It's a gift. I have a little Lucinda Walsh in me.
>> Lucinda: Heaven help you, you'd better.
>> Lily: Heaven did help me, because you're my mom. Yore my mom, and I'll always be grateful.
>> Lucinda: I just look at you. And I just love you so much.
>> Lily: And I love you. There's this whole part of the world that's out there. My family. There's this big question mark on it. Blood relatives of mine out there that I've never -- they're strangers to me, and I would like to meet them. And like -- it's part of me, too. It's part of who I am.
>> Lucinda: I understand. I understand. It's just that if you ever should, you know, if you need me --
>> Lily: This is something I have to do myself. For me and for the kids.
>> Lucinda: Sometimes, you know, one wants a lot of answers to questions, but sometimes it's better to leave the past alone, because what you find might not be what you're looking for.
Scene 5:
> Simon: Okay, here we go. Last will and testament of Vera Hathaway. Okay. "I, Vera Hathaway, being of sound mind, body, soul --" blah blah blah -- "leave all my worldly possessions to my niece, caroline carpenter. Yes. Yes. Caroline. Lily's branch of the family. So someone close to her must have it. I knew it.
>> Lucinda: Did I say I loved you?
>> Lily: Yeah, well, I love you. I love you, too.
>> Lucinda: Good that you remembered.
>> Lily: I do. How could I forget?
Scene6:
Lily typing on the computer:
>> Lily: "I recognize the lady. I have the same picture." "What's it to you?" "Thank you for your response. Can you tell me who the woman is?"
