EPISODE #23
APRIL 17, 2000

Scene 1:
Location: Cal Stiicklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room - front doorway.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

[Lily Walsh Snyder is dressed like the black and white photo of "Beloved."]

>> Lily: Simon? You look as if you've seen a ghost.
>> Simon: No. You know, I'm just -- I'm just overwhelmed. I've never seen you looking so --
>> Lily: So -- what?
>> Simon: So -- so elegant.
>> Lily: Oh.
>> Simon: Beautiful.
>> Lily: You sound surprised.
>> Simon: I am. Not by your beauty, but by the way you dressed. It's so -- it's so unexpected. Whatever possessed you to dress like this?

Scene 2:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Lily: Don't be coy, Simon. You know exactly what inspired all of this.
>> Simon: Well, I hate to disappoint you, Lily, but I haven't got a clue.
>> Lily: I thought this look would have special meaning for both of us.
>> Simon: Really?
>> Lily: Mm-hmm.
>> Simon: I can't imagine why.
>> Lily: Isn't it obvious? Don't I look like I was born to wear these clothes?
>> Simon: Well, yes. Yes, you do look incredible, but I must say that if there's some special message behind your attire, I don't know what it is.
>> Lily: Have you forgotten?
>> Simon: Forgotten what?
>> Lily: The sketch you did for luke. I was wearing period clothes, and you said it was an idea you had for my portrait, remember?
>> Simon: Oh, yes -- yes. No, I do, I do, I do. It was an idea I toyed with, and I was certainly on the right track. You look amazing.
>> Lily: Thank you. I was hoping you'd like it.
>> Simon: But tell me. What made you decide to come by and pose at this late hour of the night?
>> Lily: No, I just -- I hope I wasn't disturbing you. No, I don't want to pose, I just -- I was going to this charity event this evening, so I decided to come by and see how the portrait was coming along.
>> Simon: The portrait?
>> Lily: Mm-hmm.
>> Simon: Now who's being coy, Lily? Because you know exactly how the portrait's coming along, because you saw it earlier -- when you dropped by to return those letters you stole.

Scene 3:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Lily: What makes you think I came back here to return those letters?
>> Simon: You came to return the letters you swiped, and you would have had ample opportunity to look at the portrait.
>> Lily: Simon, I have no idea what you're talking about.
>> Simon: There's no point lying to me, lily. Look, I noticed several letters were missing earlier. At first, I assumed I'd misplaced them. So, I practically turned this place upside down searching for them. Then, just a short time ago, I checked one more time -- only to find that the letters had mysteriously reappeared.
>> Lily: Why you would think I had anything to do with that?
>> Simon: Lily, who else in town knows, or even cares, that those letters even exist?
>> Lily: Why should I bother defending myself? You assume that I'm guilty.
>> Simon: You want to know the most frustrating part, lily? Not that you stole the letters, but that I just gave you a fair go to come clean, and you chose to lie. Whatever it is you're up to lily, I want no part of it. The portrait will have to remain unfinished. I'll see you later.
>> Lily: Wait, don't go, please! You're right. I did steal the letters!

Scene 3:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: Why, Lily? Why would you take something that you know is so important to me, only to return it later?
>> Lily: This is very embarrassing.
>> Simon: Go on.
>> Lily: I knew you were leaving soon, and I wanted to read the letters one last time.
>> Simon: What, so you took them?
>> Lily: The last time I was here to pose, you let me read one of them.
>> Simon: That's because it distracted you, so I put them away.
>> Lily: That's why I took them, for myself.
>> Simon: Look, Lily, I can -- I can understand your wanting to reread them, that I get. But what I don't get is, why didn't you just ask me for them? You must have known I would have obliged.
>> Lily: I wanted to. And I know, I could have asked you. But then, I realized how embarrassing it would be for me if I told you the real reason --
>> Simon: Embarrassing? Come on. After all we've shared?
>> Lily: That's it. That's just it. We have shared so much. And those letters -- those letters -- that's how we met. That's why I had to read them, just one more time.
>> Simon: What are you getting at, Lily?
>> Lily: Don't you know?
>> Simon: No. No, I don't. So tell me, please, simply and honestly.
>> Lily: This is difficult, very difficult.
>> Simon: But stalling won't make it any easier!
>> Lily: I'm not stalling!
>> Simon: Come on.
>> Lily: For the past few weeks, I've really been looking forward to this time that we've spent together. And I realize that I'm not being completely honest with myself. This is not just a friendship.
>> Simon: Honest about what?
>> Lily: You're really not going to make this easy for me, are you? I came here because --
>> Simon: Because why?
>> Lily: I wanted to know what it was like to be beloved.

Scene 4:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: So, you want to know how it feels to be beloved?

[Simon gives Lily a glass of wine(?)]

>> Lily: Doesn't every woman?
>> Simon: I wouldn't know. But what I do know is that you deserve to be beloved, adored and cherished.
>> Lily: I'm so glad to here you say that.
>> Simon: It's just an honest observation, lily. You are the complete woman. You are beautiful, intelligent, full of life.
>> Lily: No one's talked to me like that in a long time.
>> Simon: Then holden doesn't appreciate you the way he should.
>> Lily: No, wait a minute, wait a minute.
>> Simon: If he did, lily, then he would spend less time at work and more time with you.
>> Lily: Holden does the best that he can. It took your great-grandfather's letters to remind me what it's like to yearn for someone so deeply, that you think about them all the time. To remember how deep and all-consuming love can be. And you've given me that gift, and I will always be grateful to you for that.
>> Simon: Lily, there -- stop. There is no reason to be embarrassed. We have spent so much time together delving into the most intimate subjects, I am not surprised that your feelings have deepened.
>> Lily: Then you're not upset?
>> Simon: No. Upset? No. Just the opposite. I'm ecstatic, because I'm just as mad about you.
>> Lily: Well, then can't you stay, even for another day?
>> Simon: Why, why? Why? What do you want to happen between us?
>> Lily: I just want us to spend one night together, and one --
>> Simon: And where does holden come into this picture?
>> Lily: He doesn't. You leave tomorrow, and tonight will be a private memory that we can keep.

[Simon takes Lily's hands and stands closer to her.]

>> Simon: I can't think of a better memory I want to take with me.

Scene 5:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: I have waited so long for this moment.
>> Lily: Me, too. That's why we should take our time.
>> Simon: Lily -- we don't have much time.
>> Lily: What time is it?
>> Simon: What difference does it make?
>> Lily: Because I -- I came over here and I was on my way to a benefit.
>> Simon: Tell them you got stuck in traffic.
>> Lily: In oakdale? At this hour?
>> Simon: Your car broke down.
>> Lily: I'm already late as it is. And by the time I get out of this dress and back into the dress, I will have missed the entire affair.
>> Simon: Lily, there will be other charity affairs. As for our affair, it's now or never.
>> Lily: I'm very tempted.
>> Simon: Give in.
>> Lily: I can't. My entire family -- they're waiting for me. My mother, iva, is there.
>> Simon: You can see your family at any time.
>> Lily: They're waiting for me. And the entire family -- they're all -- they all got decked out. This is a big, big deal tonight.
>> Simon: So they're all dressed up to the nines?
>> Lily: Sort of.
>> Simon: Well, if everyone went to so much trouble, you're right, you would be missed.
>> Lily: I knew you'd understand. So I'll see you soon, okay?
>> Simon: No, you'll see me sooner than that. Because if the entire snyder/walsh clan is stepping out in all its finest, I want to be there to witness the whole event. I'm going to come with you.

Scene 6:
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER ARRIVES.

LUCINDA WALSH AND LILY WALSH SNYDER

>> Lily: Mother.
>> Lucinda: Darling. Well, hello.
>> Lily: Hello.
>> Lucinda: How fetching you look. Hello.
>> Lily: Oh, thank you.
>> Lucinda: Oh, lily, it's very operatic, but this isn't a costume party.
>> Lily: You don't like my dress?
>> Lucinda: It's very --

LUCINDA WALSH, LILY WALSH SNYDER, AND SIMON FRASIER.

>> Simon: I think she looks absolutely stunning.
>> Lucinda: Well, dear, I'm absolutely stunned that, that you'd come with mr. Frasier to this party. What happened to the man that you usually go to parties with -- your husband?
>> Lily: He's not here?

IVA SNYDER BENEDICT WALKS UP.

>> Iva: Lily!
>> Lucinda: Not unless he's in the masked ball, darling.
>> Iva: You made it. That's a lovely dress.
>> Lily: Oh, you like my dress?
>> Iva: Yes, it's beautiful.
>> Lily: Thank you. You remember simon frasier.
>> Iva: Oh, I never forget a handsome face. Nice to see you.
>> Simon: It's a pleasure to see you again, iva. Lily told me you would all be dressed up to the hilt, you know. I was half expecting to see the crown jewels on display.
>> Iva: Oh, well, this time, I opted for a simple necklace. Do you like it?
>> Simon: I think it is stunning.
>> Lucinda: Crown jewels on iva? You know, I actually have some questions I'd like you to answer, mr. Frasier, about the fire that almost destroyed lily's house.
>> Simon: Of course. Of course. Excuse us.
>> Iva: Excuse us.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND IVA SNYDER BENEDICT

>> Iva: The last I heard, you were going to get the goods on the guy. And now he's your date?!
>> Lily: I was just trying to get -- to do anything I could to stop him from leaving, so I went over there in this dress, hoping he would slip something out about "beloved," but he had a very different reaction.
>> Iva: Well, it was just a cover to throw you off.
>> Lily: I didn't know what else to do. So, I --
>> Iva: What?
>> Lily: I came onto him.
>> Iva: You what?!
>> Lily: Just -- I didn't know what else to do. Now, he's expecting some passionate one-night stand or something.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: Lily, do you mind if I have a word with you?
>> Lily: Oh, absolutely.
>> Simon: In private?
>> Lily: In private, okay. Excuse me. Excuse me.
>> Simon: Excuse us.

HOLDEN SNYDER AND MISS KATIE PERETTI

>> Holden: Are you sure you're ready for this?
>> Katie: I am ready for anything now.
>> Henry: Hi. We need to hustle if we want to get a decent story. This thing is winding down.
>> Holden: Henry, the story can wait. I need to talk to you. Get yourself acquainted with the room. We'll be right back.
>> Katie: Okay.

LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: The night is still young.
>> Lily: But holden --
>> Simon: We'll give him the slip. And we'll pick up where we left off.
>> Lily: Not here, not yet.
>> Simon: Lily, I hate having to wait.
>> Lily: It'll be worth it, I promise.

Scene 7:
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER, OVERHEARD BY MISS KATIE PERETTI.

>> Simon: Lily, why hold back? We both know what we want.

Scene 7:
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER

>> Simon: Lily, come on, let's go, while there's still time.

HOLDEN SNYDER WALKS UP.

[Holden grabs Simon and turns him around.]

>> Holden: What are you doing with my wife?!

[Lily looks surprised.]
