Scene 1:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: Lily. What are you doing?
>> Lily: Uh -- what do you think I'm doing?
>> Simon: Well, it's pretty obvious, isn't it? So, now, I finally know what you came here for.
Scene 2:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: You never intended to come and sit for the portrait today, did you? You came to sneak a look, didn't you? I thought I specifically asked you not to.
>> Lily: You caught me! I couldn't resist any longer. I'm sorry.
>> Simon: And so what? Knocking over that plant was a big ploy to get me out of the room?
>> Lily: No, no, no, no, no, that was an accident, then, you left the room, and I took my chances.
>> Simon: Lily, don't you trust me to make this good? To give you something you'll be proud to give to your husband?
>> Lily: Yes, I do trust you. Very much. And I know that it is going to be wonderful. You just teased me with those beautiful sketches that you -- that you did.
>> Simon: We're now in the painting stage. And when I paint, I need privacy, not someone interfering with my vision.
>> Lily: Oh, I just want to say one thing. That is just -- that's perfect. It's absolutely per -- you have no idea how much this portrait means to me after losing all those old family photographs in that fire. I don't have to tell you that, because you went back into the house and tried to save them for me. I'm going to have something for my children. My children's children. I don't have anything like this in my family at all. I had the photographs, but they're all gone.
>> Simon: Lily, I'm sorry for running off like that. I just -- I don't understand why you felt the need to snoop behind my back.
>> Lily: It's not about the portrait. It's about you.
[Fade to a commercial break.]
Scene 3:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Lily: I just can't lose this feeling that you are a guide in my life -- a catalyst. I never would've found my family pictures, I never would've found out their life stories if I hadn't met you. Last night, I realized that once this painting's done, I may never see you again, and I'm so sorry.
>> Simon: Well, you know something, lily? So am I.
>> Lily: And the more I think about it, the more depressed I was getting, and I can't quite figure out why. >> Simon: Nothing that your husband would object to?
>> Lily: No. Not at all. It's just, when I opened the door to you at my house, when I first met you, you had this look in your eye, like you recognized me, like I was familiar to you in some way.
>> Simon: Well, you know that's impossible. But, I'll tell you. When I did open the door, and I saw you for the first time, I knew instantly that you were simpatico.
>> Lily: We are. That's why I wanted to know about your family. That's why I was asking you all these questions. It's seems so sad to me that you would leave, and I know so little about you.
>> Simon: There's really nothing else I can -- I can tell you about me, you know?
>> Lily: Your great grandfather's story -- his love story is -- it haunts me. Do you know what happened to beloved?
>> Simon: No one does. No one knows. She just simply vanished to america.
>> Lily: So tragic. Separated from her one true love, just because your great grandfather's family wanted him to marry somebody wealthy, and they lied to him and said that she had left willingly, for money.
>> Simon: It was out of their control.
>> Lily: When you get involved in someone's story on such a personal level, they become a part of you.
>> Simon: I know. I know that's the power of any really moving story.
>> Lily: Before I go, may I see his letters again?
Scene 4:
Location: Cal Stricklyn's farmhouse.
Scene: Living room.
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: You want to read the letters again? Well, I can't tell you how many times I've read them.
>> Lily: You said you have them under your own version of lock and key.
>> Simon: Yes. Shut your eyes. Okay.
>> Lily: Great.
>> Simon: Here we go.
>> Lily: Careful. You know what I'll do? I'll sit down, and you can paint, and I'll read the letter.
>> Simon: That's a terrific idea. Take a seat. All right.
LILY WALSH SNYDER READS THE LETTER TO HERSELF.
>> Lily: "My dearest Beloved, Yesterday's secret rendezvous at the garden is burned forever in my memory. Your rose-colored dress, the mischievous way you disappeared among the lilacs, your laughter when you let me find you again. The hours that I spend at home with my family as they talk of my upcoming nuptials to a woman I do not love pass as slowly as those for whom life has lost all savor. The ticking of the great clock in the hall is a constant reminder of moments missed with you. Can you meet me tomorrow at noon at the Central Railway Station? I thought we might take an afternoon's trip along the coast and journey far and away from all that binds us. Until then, I count the minutes -- no seconds, until I can see you again. Forever and ever yours, simon."
LILY WALSH SNYDER AND SIMON FRASIER
>> Simon: You're finished already?
>> Lily: It's a shame that there's not a letter about how the lovers parted or what happened to the beloved. I'll just look through those letters again.
>> Simon: Wait, wait, wait. One thing at a time. You see, I really need you to concentrate on posing, so we can finish this.
>> Lily: Okay, I understand. I get it. Ooh. You know, it's kinda chilly. Could you give me a cup of tea? Yeah, sure thing.
>> Lily: Great.
>> Simon: How do you like it?
>> Lily: Just straight. Thank you.
>> Simon: Comin' right up.
Scene 5:

>> Simon: Here we go. I have no idea what type it is.
>> Lily: It's great.
>> Simon: Well, at least it's hot.
>> Lily: Thank you very much. You know, I would love to go to australia some day.
>> Simon: Yeah? Well, you should. It's an amazingly beautiful country.
>> Lily: So wonderful that you were able to take a year and travel around. Lucky for me you didn't pick italy.
>> Simon: I've got to go to a place where at least I can speak the language.
>> Lily: What about england? Or ireland?
>> Simon: I don't know. I guess I decided to focus on the U.S. And its architecture, because it kind of suits my own style, I guess.
>> Lily: You wind up in oakdale. Like iva said, it's not exactly the architectural capital of the world.
>> Simon: No, it's not flashy, but, I don't know, oakdale's a perfect representation of an american town.
>> Lily: Where are you going next? What's going to be your next stop on your walkabout?
>> Simon: Ah, wherever I end up. You know, I'll get a dart and throw it at the map.
>> Lily: What are you looking for? What do you expect to get traveling around america?
>> Simon: I want to reclaim an old fool's dream.
>> Lily: I'm don't know if I like the sound of that.
>> Simon: You know, I think we've done enough for today.
[Lily reaches down by her chair and grabs her purse and holds it.]
